Assessment and Classroom Management in Music Education - MUSED465

This class is designed to introduce developing music teachers to basic concepts and theories regarding assessment, classroom management, motivation, and evaluative processes.  By the end of the course, you will be able to:

1.  Design and implement reliable and valid assessments within the

     music classroom.

2.  Articulate a philosophy of assessment and classroom management        that you will employ within your classroom.

3.  Identify effective assessment and classroom management

techniques that are supported by research findings.

4.  Describe leading theories in cognitive and social development.

5.  Connect concepts about assessment and classroom management to

     the edTPA teaching assessment.

The course objectives will be accomplished through timely readings, active participation in class discussion and activities, and class projects.

As a teaching preparation course, attendance and participation are expected for each class session.  This is part of your training as a professional educator; it should be a priority in your schedule.  After 3 absences for any reason (medical, professioanl, or emergency), you will lose points in your participation grade - 2 points per absence.  You can make up those points by doing an alternate assignment if arranged prior to the absence (maximum of 3 make-up assignments).  If you miss more than 20% of the class (6 class meetings), you should consider dropping this class.

Final grades in this course are determined by the final total of points earned on all assignments, participation, and preparation. The following scale shows the minimum number of points required to earn the given landmark grades. Other grades not shown (i.e., 3.9 or 2.7) will also be calculated using this scale.
